Dangerous Plastic

Plastic can be a scary thing, especially if you are using it for food and/or beverage storage.  Plastic stains (despite companies that now claim theirs does not) and you have to wonder if it is every truly clearn.  Plastic scratches allowing microparticles (READ: GERMS) to collect in the scratches and create an unsanitary environment for your food and/or beverage.  Plastic is also made from chemicals - some that have found to be bad for humans (BPA) but companies are not required to keep these chemicals out of their formulas.

As adults we drink out of glasses when we are at home.  We eat off of ceramic plates (typically) and we use stainless steel silverware.  Our household pets often eat out of stainless steel or ceramic bowls as they are safer than plastic.

Perhaps this is why I am so baffled by the concept that almost all baby and children's food/beverage containers are typically plastic.  Bottles, spoons, sippy cups, binkies, plates, bowls - all plastic!  While it is my hope that our son will not need to use formula - I certainly can't be around 24/7 which left me with a need to determine what type of bottle we will use.  There are about 245 choices if you want to go with plastic but I have decided that we will use glass.  Glass has been around since the beginning of time (well, not really but you get what I am trying to say) and while more fragile - the health benfits of drinking from glass vs. plastic can't be ignored.

There are a few companies that made glass bottles.  One company in particular makes a glass bottle (and a glass sippy cup) that has a silicon cover over it to not only help with grip but also to protect the glass.  That company is called LifeFactory

I have purchased one of their larger water containers in order to determine how durable they really are.  I am hard on my water bottles (they get tossed in my bag, banged against the things in my bag, and are used almost daily) so if I don't break this glass bottle in the next 2 months I will feel more comfortable ordering a few bottles.

So, what color do you think now lives in my work bag and travels everywhere I go?
